The Importance of Proper Workplace Ergonomics from our Beverly Hills Chiropractor
Proper workplace ergonomics are important for avoiding pain, stiffness, eye strain, and the other maladies. These problems are especially common in offices where you have to sit at a desk all day. Bad workstation setups combine with a lack of motion to amplify negative effects and cause work injury. Fortunately, it isn't hard to adjust your workstation to prevent these problems. We at Beverly Hills Comprehensive Medical Group present these tips for you to use:
Adjust Your Chair and Desk
The height of your chair should be so that your knees are approximately in line with your hips, the Mayo Clinic says. Use a footrest if you cannot get your chair low enough. Your desk height should allow you to keep your wrists straight, with your hands at or below the height of your elbows. Sometimes, you'll have to keep your chair higher than is optimal in order to sit tall enough relative to your desk. Since it is harder to adjust the height of a desk than a chair, feel free to change your chair height and then use a footrest.
Your Computer
Keep your monitor at arm's length and at eye level. This distance is easier on your eyes and helps prevent neck strain. It also leaves room for you to keep your keyboard on the desktop, and this is far superior to having it down below on a keyboard shelf. A shelf makes you put your hands too low and can strain your wrists. Keep your mouse on the same surface as your keyboard. This helps prevent unnecessary motions and strain on your hand, wrist, and elbow.
Use a Speaker or Headset When Talking on the Phone
Cradling a phone receiver between your shoulder and head causes neck and shoulder strain. This can become debilitatingly painful over time. Use speakerphone or a headset to avoid this problem, especially if your job requires frequent phone use.
