Lumbar Disk Bulge
At Beverly Hills Comprehensive Medical Group, we work with many people suffering from pain and dysfunction caused by lumbar disk bulge. A bulging lumbar disc occurs when the gel-like structure between two vertebrae protrudes out of its normal resting position. This is typically due to sudden or repetitive bending, lifting, or twisting of the spine. The fibers surrounding the outside of the disc remain intact (when they rupture, this condition is known as disk herniation). However, depending on the degree and direction of the disk bulge, structures around the disk can become irritated and/or impinged, including spinal nerves, spinal ligaments, and other tissues, which leads to unpleasant symptoms.
What are the signs and symptoms of lumbar disk bulge?
The most common signs and symptoms of a lumbar disk bulge include:
- numbness or tingling in one or both legs
- pain in one or both legs
- decreased strength or reflexes in one or both legs
Notice that very often a bulging lumbar disk causes no back pain at all! Soreness and fatigue in the low back, however, especially of the muscles overlaying the affected area, may occur.
Does a lumbar disk bulge always cause symptoms?
No. Sometimes, a bulging disk in the spine causes no symptoms at all.
How are lumbar disk bulges treated?
The exact treatment of a lumbar disk bulge depends on the severity and type. Conservative chiropractic treatment can include spinal decompression, chiropractic adjustments, corrective exercise, and lifestyle and nutritional counseling.
