Flu Season and Virus Transmission
Flu season in the United States typically starts in October when the seasonal temperatures fall and lasts until May when the weather warms. There are two reasons for the propagation of the flu in winter. When the temperature drops, more people spend time indoors and in close contact with other individuals. This allows the virus to more easily pass from person to person. Additionally, the flu virus thrives in cold, dry air. This is because when individuals sneeze or cough, the droplets stay in the air longer as the air extracts the moisture. This allows more people to breathe in the virus and potentially get sick.
Protection and Prevention against the Flu
Protecting yourself against the flu requires a dual pronged approach. You should get the flu shot early before the start of flu season. This allows your body to build the antibodies before flu season begins, protecting you from getting sick and passing the virus on to others.
Additionally, you should practice good hygiene by washing your hands frequently and not putting your unclean hands around your face or your mouth. If you cough or sneeze, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or the sleeve of your shirt or coat. Never sneeze into your hand or on your gloves. Sneezing onto your hand and then touching a counter, doorknob or other person can transfer the germs from you to the object or individual, potentially causing illness in another person.
By following these flu season tips and getting your flu shot early, you are helping prevent the spread of the disease and protecting yourself, your family members, friends and coworkers this flu season.
